unable to wake him
the black of current under us as the ferry moved us back 'home' next to me, he stood, arms folded over the railing. we waved good bye to the place that felt so much like where we should have been born from. her salty air, her beaches her trees, her tranquility. inside we knew this was it as it had been it before it was ever seen. the previous night, we collapsed into sleep, the window open and sound of dawn approaching. naked and vulnerable, I watched him as his chest rose and fell, the rooster crowing in the distance unable to wake him.
